Named by many Hispanics as Turkey Day, Thanksgiving is a National holiday to give thanks for food, health, friends, family… which is just a celebration to spend time with family and loves ones, but… where, when and why did this tradition originate, which is one of the most important here in the United States? Ii was started in Plymouth, North America, in the current state of Massachusetts in 1623, as thanks for the harvest, although there is evidence that English settlers held celebrations in Texas in 1598 and this is the subject of constant debate. The question now would be why turkey? As a symbol of abundance, peace and union! The English settlers offered a dinner to the Massachusetts Indians in gratitude for having taught them their farming and hunting techniques. The turkey, being large enough to feed several people and being easy to raise compared with other animals, became a tradition. As a curious fact, the turkey is of Mexican origin, it belongs to the group Meleagaris gallipavo, better known as Guajolote!
