The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that so far 4 deaths have been reported in connection to the use of lubricant eyedrops containing highly drug-resistant bacteria.
The products in question are the EzriCare Artificial Tears made by India-based company Global Pharma Healthcare. These are mostly sold over the internet. Other infected products include Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Tears and Delsam Pharma Artificial Eye Ointment, all made by the same manufacturer.
Among the 81 cases detected, 14 have experienced permanent blindness and other 4 had to get their eyeballs surgically removed. The CDC also states that another 4 lost their lives as a result of the infection, which can be deadly if it invades the bloodstream.
