Fall 2023 COVID-19 Vaccine

November 2023, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released updated COVID-19 vaccine recommendations for the fall and winter respiratory illness season. The new COVID-19 vaccines are designed to target the variants currently circulating and are recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older.

On October 3, 2023, the FDA authorized the updated Novavax COVID-19 vaccine as an alternative to the Pfizer or Moderna mRNA vaccines. People aged 12 and older who haven’t already gotten an updated mRNA vaccine are eligible to receive it.

Where To Get the New COVID-19 Vaccine

The new COVID-19 vaccine is currently available in pharmacies and local health centers. Most people living in the U.S. can still get a COVID-19 vaccine for free.

  • For people with health insurance (including Medicare and Medicaid), most plans will cover COVID-19 vaccine at no cost to you. Visit your local pharmacy or healthcare provider and make sure to bring your insurance card.
  • People who are uninsured or underinsured can receive free COVID vaccines through a CDC initiative called the Bridge Access Program.
