The Best Of Two Worlds

A Difficult Question

Let me start by asking you a rather difficult question: “If there had been a death in your family yesterday, what would you be doing today?” It’s not something that we like to think about, I know, because it’s probably one of the toughest questions you will ever have to face.

If you are like most families that we help, you may not know what to say to answer my question other than, “I guess we would call somebody”.

That is a start and a good one of course, and that “somebody” you call will certainly want to help you, but they are going to need a tremendous amount of detailed information.

67 Decisions

What families find is that over 67 decisions must be made and many of them within just a few hours of a death. A lot of information is needed that we don’t normally have at our fingertips. You see, all arrangements must be made for the entire funeral and burial and made very quickly.

Here is the type of questions that will be asked:

  • What type of service do you want?
  • What type of casket or urn?
  • How do you want to be dressed?
  • How will the funeral/cremation be paid for?
  • What type of burial do you want?

Facing This Burden Alone

It is a well-known fact that 7 out of 10 times, husbands will die before their wives. That means that in almost every case, it is the wife, children, or close family members who, when the family has not pre-planned, must assume the burden of making arrangements. Over the years, we have met countless families who have come into our office to make arrangements, and regardless of the number of family members that come in, there is usually one family member who is burdened with making all the final and permanent decisions.

They almost always feel quite alone.

(In the case of an unmarried or non-traditional couple, “One of the two of you is going to have to face this burden alone.”)
