Viva Performing Arts Studio: A Tucson Artistic and Cultural Legacy

By Raul Aguirre

For nearly 40 years, Julie Gallego has been the driving force behind Viva Performing Arts Studio, a beacon of cultural preservation and artistic excellence in Tucson. As a pioneer, leader and principal cultural contributor, Gallego has dedicated her life to promoting Mexican Folklórico regional dances, Chicano culture, and modern dance. Her contributions are unmatched nationally, earning her a revered place in the hearts of her students and community.

Throughout her illustrious career, Gallego has mentored numerous outstanding students, helping them to achieve excellence in their craft. Her expertise and passion have also made her a staple at major USA and international Mariachi Conferences and concerts, where her performances have captivated audiences.

For the last 16 years, Gallego’s studio on Park Avenue was the epicenter of her teaching. However, when she decided to retire and sold the building, it seemed like the end of an era. But, thanks to the encouragement of her daughter and niece, Gallego reconsidered her decision. In a triumphant return, she reopened Viva Performing Arts Studio at a new location: 3708 S. 16th Ave., on Ajo Way at the Santa Cruz Plaza.

Today, Gallego’s legacy continues to flourish. Viva Performing Arts Studio remains a vibrant and dynamic space where over 200 dancers of all ages come together to learn, perform, and celebrate their heritage. The studio’s shows are nothing short of spectacular, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry and artistic talent of Tucson. Julie Gallego’s influence and dedication ensure that the spirit of Folklórico and Chicano culture will thrive for generations to come.
