World Refugee Day is celebrated every June 20th and is a day dedicated to honoring the strength, courage, and resilience of people who have been forced to flee their countries due to armed conflict, persecution, violence, or human rights violations.
This commemoration, established by the United Nations in 2000, seeks to raise awareness about the plight of the more than 100 million displaced people around the world, promote empathy and solidarity for those who have lost their homes and need protection, and defend refugee rights, including their access to education, healthcare, employment, and a new beginning.
No one chooses to be a refugee; fleeing to save their lives or that of their family is the only option. We all deserve a life of dignity, safety, and opportunity.
No one chooses to be a refugee, but we can all choose to show solidarity.
This June 20th, we honor the courage of those who have had to start over.
