The Mayor and Councilors of the City of Tucson will have to be creative in which areas they should spend the $ 95M from the federal fund of CARES

TUCSON OFFICIALS DISCUSSING HOW TO SPEND $95M IN FEDERAL FUNDS– The City of Tucson recently was awarded $95 million in funding from the federal CARES act to overcome deficits caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Spending that money has to be strategic, since the funds can only be used for coronavirus-related expenses, not for revenue-replacement.

Some of the allowed expenditures include the costs to acquire medical and protective supplies, improve telework capabilities for employees, provide paid sick and family leave to employees, and care for Tucson’s homeless.

The City also needs to find ways to deal with an uncertain amount of lost revenue, mainly due to a drop in sales taxes as local businesses were forced to close to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Some businesses are starting to open this week in limited form, with a number of restrictions. The Mayor and Tucson City Council will discuss the budget tomorrow, May 5, during its 2 p.m. Study Session.
