The man dialed 911 with bloody hands and reported that he had just stabbed his father and had placed the knife in the dishwasher.
When officers arrived at the Avondale home, they found Gustavo Reyes Jr., 29, covered in blood and walking around, according to court documents released Tuesday.
The man’s father was lying on the floor with stab wounds to his torso and legs, the document says.
Reyes was ordered to be held on a $1 million bond after being arrested Sunday and accused of the murder.
Court records say that Reyes’ brother, whose name is not given in the report, had dropped him off at the house at 10:30 a.m. At 10:45 a.m. Reyes texted him to come back, the records say.
A few minutes later, Reyes called his mother, who was out of the country, to tell her that he killed his father, court records say.
The mother then called the brother to tell him about the possible stabbing, records say. The brother called 911 at around 10:56 a.m. asking police to check on his father, records say.
Reyes’ own call to police came a few minutes later. When police entered the home, they saw Reyes Jr. holding his cellphone, records say, and the screen’s display showing he was on the line with 911.
Police said Reyes’ hands and forearms were covered in blood and water as if “he had tried to wash his hands,” according to the court document.
Paramedics declared the father dead at the home. Reyes Jr. was taken to a hospital for a laceration on his leg, according to court records.
At the hospital, Reyes made “spontaneous” statements about killing his father.
In a search of the home, court records say, police found a half-broken bloody knife not in the dishwasher, but in the kitchen sink.
