The Best Of Two Worlds

Editor’s Letter – September 2023

Dear readers,

September begins with high temperatures in our region still and extreme weather in all sides of the continent; to the west, Tropical Storm Hilary wreaked havoc from the shores of Baja California Sur up to the great metropolis of San Diego and its surroundings areas and more. To the east, and depending on when you’re reading this letter, Hurricane Idalia has once again placed Florida between a rock and a hard place with flash floods. It is not the first time I notify you of these events surrounding the weather and it will not be the last, as every day we dig ourselves deeper into this climate emergency which only few seem to care about.

September begins also with many things to celebrate and remember. Among them, this month we remember the 3,000 people that died on the days of the attacks of September 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center in New York City 22 years ago. This terrible tragedy not only left a scar inside the minds of Americans, but it was one of the events that defined an entire decade because of all that resulted that day; from the war in Iraq to the militarization of the border.

Away from the darkness, September likewise represents a month of celebration for the millions of Latin Americans that celebrate their respective national month: Mexico, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Honduras all dress in their flag’s colors in observance of their independence days. For the Mexican people, 213 years have passed since such revolution that liberated them from the crown of the New Spain; let’s celebrate all that makes us proud about our country! Its music, culture, and indigenous peoples; its rich gastronomy, landscapes, and more, let all Mexicans around the world celebrate this great festivity!

I make use of this space also to invite all of our readers to join us at all the events that will take place this fall and winter from September to December. They are all events of information, culture, entertainment, education, health, and recreation. Stay updated through our print editions and media platforms where you will be able to learn of them , fortunately in better weather.
