The City of Tucson and El Rio Health will offer free COVID-19 tests beginning Saturday, Sept. 12, at the El Pueblo Center, 101 W. Irvington Road.
Testing will take place on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 7-10 a.m. and Thursdays from 5-8 p.m. To register for a test, call El Rio Health at (520) 670-3909 and schedule an appointment. A doctor’s order is not needed to get the test, but organizers do ask everyone to make an appointment. Enter the parking lot from S. 6th Avenue / S. Nogales Highway and follow on-site signage to the testing location.
“With this testing site, we are expanding accessibility across our city to ensure that every Tucsonan who wants to receive a test is able to,” said Tucson Mayor Regina Romero. “As recently as a few weeks ago, the data showed a higher number of cases in this area, which is why we’re setting up the site at El Pueblo to ensure community members and local businesses have adequate access to testing. While we have made great strides to slow COVID-19, we saw during the summer how quickly this virus can spread, which is why we must keep our guard up and continue following public health guidelines.”
This is the second free testing site operated by the City of Tucson and funded through the City’s federal CARES Act grant. Testing began at the Morris K. Udall Center last month. Testing will continue at these sites until no longer needed to control the pandemic.
“I am very pleased that a permanent COVID-19 testing site on the Southside of my district has come to fruition, and appreciative of the City of Tucson’s leadership in making it happen,” said Pima County Supervisor Betty Villegas. “The high rate of the virus on the Southside has been a major concern for District Five since the onset of the pandemic, and this test site will provide equitable access to the community.”
“I am pleased to see the new testing site established at the Pueblo Center to expand access to testing for Tucsonans on the Southside,” said Ward 5 Council Member Richard Fimbres. “I encourage our community to take advantage of this new testing site to keep themselves and their families healthy.”
