The Best Of Two Worlds

Discovering Sonora

Aconchi is a picturesque town located in the center of the state of Sonora, Mexico, known for its history, traditions, and, especially, for its hot springs, a natural treasure known as “El Agua Caliente de Aconchi.” These waters emerge from a spring with temperatures reaching 59°C and are located about 4 kilometers from the town center. The resort offers swimming pools, wading pools, camping areas, palapas with grills, bathrooms, showers, and cabin rentals, all surrounded by beautiful green areas.

Founded in 1639 by the Jesuit missionary Bartolomé Castaño under the name of San Pedro de Aconchi, this settlement was established with the purpose of evangelizing the Opata tribes of the region. The name “Aconchi” comes from the Opata language, derived from “Acǒtzi,” which means “on the walls,” alluding to its mountainous geography.

It is located approximately 147 kilometers northeast of Hermosillo, the state capital, and 432 kilometers from Nogales, on the border with the United States. From Hermosillo, take Mexico International Highway 15 to San Pedro El Saucito, then Highway 14 to Ures, and finally State Highway 89, which leads directly to Aconchi.

Aconchi celebrates various festivals throughout the year, such as the Day of the Lord of Esquipulas (January 15), the Carpenter’s Dance (March 19), in honor of the local carpentry tradition, Holy Week festivities, the Day of Saint Peter, the town’s patron saint (June 29), National Holidays (September 15 and 16), and the Mexican Revolution celebrations (November 20).

Carpentry is a prominent activity in Aconchi, with workshops producing fine furniture and carvings from native wood, renowned in the region.

Aconchi is part of the Sonora River Route, a 400-kilometer tourist route that follows the course of the Sonora River, connecting towns with a rich historical and cultural heritage, such as Ures, Baviácora, Huépac, Banámichi, and Cananea.

Aconchi is an ideal destination for those looking to relax in natural hot springs, enjoy the tranquility of a town steeped in history, and immerse themselves in the traditions of the heart of Sonora.
