The City of Tucson Parks and Recreation department regularly receives reports of people abandoning their pets, like turtles and ducks, in City parks. People release their unwanted animals into City lakes and ponds. Abandoning an unwanted pet into the wild is dangerous for the animal as it does not know how to survive in the new environment, which means facing predators, obtaining water or food on their own, and adapting to extreme weather conditions. If pet owners are feeling overwhelmed with an animal and don’t know what to do with it, a first step would be to try to rehome the animal. In addition, pet owners are encouraged to call the Pima Animal Care Center (PACC), the Humane Society, or Tucson Wildlife Center for advice on what to do.
