The Best Of Two Worlds

Could Donald Trump become president if he is found guilty?

President Trump’s indictment is a first in American history, as a former president has never been successfully charged for committing federal crimes. Among the multitude of legal challenges currently facing Trump, the gravest at the time is considered his hoarding of highly classified documents and the mishandling of them. Some of these papers included sensitive material like national nuclear secrets and capabilities, as well as those of U.S. allies.

The question many are asking is, however, can he run for president if he is found guilty of all he is accused of? The answer is a surprising “yes.” The only requirements needed for a person to run for president are being over 35 years old, a natural-born citizen, and live in the United States for at least 14 years. Constitutionally, there is nothing barring Trump from running for president, or even executing the office of the president behind bars.
