Thanks to all the organizers who have spent years working on this victory!
Thank you to all the young immigrants who share their stories and to the members of our community who vote for Proposition 308 and know that our immigrant community deserves better.
What is Prop 308?
Aliento was founded by Reyna Montoya, a dreamer who was personally affected by not having access to the same educational opportunities as her peers. The Dreamers are students from Arizona who came to the United States as children. The Arizona Dreamers studied hard, listened to their teachers, and followed the rules, but they were not eligible for in-state tuition or public scholarships.
Aliento is deeply committed to co-creating and building a place where human potential is nurtured. Aliento supports students and families impacted by the inequities of not having immigration status through educational initiatives, arts and healing programming, leadership development training, policy and advocacy.
Dreamers have grown up with their peers playing sports, attending our schools, and have called Arizona home. The Dreamers are children from Arizona.
Prop. 308 gives Arizona voters the opportunity to allow all students, including Arizona Dreamers, to receive an in-state college education. Tuition will be given when a student (a) attended a school in Arizona for a minimum of two years and (b) graduated from an Arizona public school, private school, or home 1education.
Currently, Arizona Dreamers has to pay more than their peers at local public colleges and universities. Each year, nearly 2,000 Dreamers graduate from our Arizona high schools eager to pursue a college education, contribute to the economy, and give back to their community. Dreamers will NOT take anyone else’s place. Universities and colleges have declared multiple times that they want more students! If a student meets the scholarship and educational institution requirements, then that person has won their spot and/or scholarship.
Finally, the Arizona Legislative Council stated that Prop. 308 will NOT have an impact on the Arizona general fund.
