As we leave spring behind and get closer to summertime, the heat of the Sonoran Desert becomes increasingly intense, driving the risk of sun exposure higher, which can prove life-threatening if not taken seriously. The Arizona Department of Health Services reported 552 heat-related deaths in 2021, with Hispanics being the second largest group and people over 65 being the most vulnerable.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health gives out the following recommendations to avoid exposure:
• Wear sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 15, applying liberally over the body and on ears, scalp, lips, neck, tops of feet, and back of hands.
• Reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours every time a person gets out of the water or sweats heavily.
• Take breaks in shaded areas as much as possible.
• Always carry and drink plenty of water.
• Wear thin clothes that are light in color and cover most of your body.
• Seek medical assistance if you feel dizziness, nausea, weakness, or experience heavy sweating.
