The Best Of Two Worlds

Message from Mayor Regina Romero

Hello Neighbor,

It has been a busy and exciting month marked by the passing of the Tucson Climate Emergency Declaration. With record-high summer temperatures and historic wildfires, it’s clear we need to act boldly to combat climate change. The Climate Emergency Declaration serves as the foundation for bold climate action for City operations and sets a goal of carbon neutrality by 2030, meaning we aim to offset and eliminate the carbon emission we currently generate as a City to achieve net zero in 10 years.

The declaration also focuses on deploying a just and equitable transition with an emphasis on people of color, immigrants, Indigenous communities, low-income individuals, people with disabilities, and the unhoused – all who are disproportionately affected by the adverse health consequences of climate change. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but I am so proud of our City’s commitment to take bold action and do our part to address climate change.

I am very excited to share that the Council supported my recommendation to provide additional CARES funds to our residents and approved $7.85 million dollars. The funds will provide much needed help to small businesses, nonprofits, workers and families, as well as entertainment venues.

My colleagues and I also approved $500,000 for childcare expenses, helping low-income families secure reliable and safe childcare to alleviate some of the stress of leaving home to provide for their families during the pandemic. Additional funds have also been allocated for rent and utility assistance. Stay tuned for more information on how to apply for the funds. Visit tucsonaz.gov for updates on the grant programs.

In solidarity,

Mayor Regina Romero
