The Best Of Two Worlds

He’s outta here — Trump ditches Fifth Avenue for Mar-a-Lago

President Trump is forsaking Manhattan for the warm ocean breezes of Palm Beach, Fla.

It’s about New York’s taxes and politics, Trump tweeted on Thursday night.

“[D]espite the fact that I pay millions of dollars in city, state and local taxes each year, I have been treated very badly by the political leaders of both the city and state. Few have been treated worse,” Trump said.

If Gov. Cuomo regrets the state political establishment’s treatment of Trump, he didn’t say so Thursday night.

“Good riddance,” Cuomo tweeted. “It’s not like @realDonaldTrump paid taxes here anyway … He’s all yours, Florida.”

Only Trump and his accountants and lawyers know for sure what he pays in New York taxes. Trump has never made his tax returns public, and New York investigators are trying to get them in court.

Though Florida leans more Republican than New York, not all of its politicians are friendly toward Trump. Lois Frankel, who represents Palm Beach in the U.S. House, is an impeachment-backing Democrat.

Trump, born in Queens and proud of his image as a savvy Manhattan real estate mogul, made his Florida move official in September when he filed papers in Palm Beach County Court saying his “permanent home” is his Mar-a-Lago resort. First Lady Melania Trump filed a similar papers.

Both Trumps reported their other homes are at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. in Washington — the White House — and as 900 Lamington Rd. in Bedminster, N.J., site of the Trump National Golf Club. The Trumps listed 721 Fifth Ave. — Trump Tower — as a place they “formerly resided.”

Trump hasn’t visited his former New York home much since he became president in 2017.

A tally by NBC News says he’s spent 99 days of his presidency at Mar-a-Lago, 90 days at the New Jersey golf club, and just 20 days at Trump Tower.
