Drug Prevention in Youth

Preventing young people from falling into drug use requires presence, communication, guidance, and constant support. It’s not just about warning them about the risks, but also about building a solid emotional, social, and educational foundation with them.

Open and nonjudgmental communication, active listening, and genuine interest and trust are essential. They should feel they can speak without fear.

  • Start by clearly explaining the real effects and consequences of substance use.
  • Help them recognize their worth, make decisions, and resist peer pressure.
  • Encourage them to engage in positive activities such as sports, art, music, and volunteering. Keeping themselves engaged in things they’re passionate about reduces risks.
  • Set limits and maintain a family structure with clear rules, consistency, and loving consequences. Loving discipline protects them.
  • Remember that example speaks louder than words. If they see responsibility, they imitate responsibility.
  • Be alert to sudden mood swings, isolation, poor academic performance, and strange new friendships.
  • Seeking professional support, if necessary, such as psychologists, school counselors, and community programs can be key allies.
