Preparing for College Application Season

For most high school students, the thought of college testing, applications and enrollment is overwhelming. The process is especially hard for first-generation college goers. Decisions like where to go, how to pay for classes and even how to apply can be a significant barrier.

But if your child needs guidance on getting to college or financing their education, there are ways to get help.

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (known as the FAFSA) early in your child’s senior year. Applications opened on Oct. 1. Check with their school. Many high schools hold college fairs and other events designed to help students understand how to apply and how to get financial aid. School counselors are often also available to assist.

The Arizona Postsecondary Commission also has a college and career guide that can help you decide which college, university, or professional training institution might be right for your child.

Talk to your children about their plans for life after high school. A traditional 4-year university might not be the right fit, but perhaps they would benefit from a certificate program or vocational school. More jobs than ever require education beyond high school, so it’s important that their educational journey doesn’t end there.
