Know the warning signs!
Cyberbullying, or online bullying, is becoming more prevalent. It is as serious as bullying in person. Most of the time it occurs around the use of a device by a minor, such as a cell phone or tablet. Warning signs that your child may be a victim or bully another child include:
• Strong emotional reactions when using a device, such as anger, laughter, or disgust.
• Noticeable increases or decreases in the use of a device.
• Hide a device when a parent is nearby.
• Delete social network accounts or create new ones.
• Becoming withdrawn, or avoiding social situations, especially those the child used to enjoy.
If you notice these warning signs, talk to your child about what is happening. This helps document harmful posts or content. Most social media platforms allow you to report harmful behavior. And most importantly, be supportive of your child. Peers, mentors, or other trusted adults, including mental health professionals, can also provide support.
