The Senate went into recess and Vice President, Mike Pence, was evacuated from the Capitol because of the riots. The deployed police officers could not contain the onslaught of hundreds of people who tore down the fence surrounding the US Congress and positioned themselves on the steps of the building. Two annexes were evacuated and the legislators were also removed with a security escort.
The United States Senate entered a recess from its debate on the Electoral College results after violent incidents with a group of protesters around the Capitol forced police to close the building. As reported by the AP agency, journalists present at the parliamentary session were told to remain in the press room while the doors of the building were closed.
In addition, a special announcement was made through the speakers inside the Capitol as legislators debated and prepared to vote affirming the victory of President-elect Joe Biden. Due to an “external security threat,” no one was allowed to enter or exit the Capitol complex, according to the recording.
The New York Times reported that Vice President Mike Pence and many lawmakers were evacuated with a major security operation.
Several hundred protesters tore down the metal barricades surrounding the back of the US Congress in Washington on Wednesday. According to The Washington Post, around 1:00 p.m. a group of men with flags of support for President Donald Trump violently entered the Capitol gardens.
Dozens of policemen were standing guard around the building but could not contain the onslaught of hundreds of people who scaled and kicked the fence, shouting “Go ahead!” as they ran towards the steps of the Capitol. Some were able to get through the front door, but inside they were detained by the police. The local press reported several arrests.
