The Mayor and Tucson City Council last night, July 21, voted 6-1 to approve the more than $1.7 billion Fiscal Year 2021 Budget. Ward 1 Council Member Lane Santa Cruz was the dissenting vote.
The Council extended the timeline for budget approval this year to allow for additional public input, much of which centered around police funding.
The approved budget allocates $166 million to the Tucson Police Department and allows the city to hire eight new social workers and a housing first director, conduct an equity assessment, and devise a climate action plan.
The spending plan will be reviewed periodically to see if any funding needs to be reallocated during the year. The next meeting of the Mayor and Council is scheduled for Aug. 11.
