Funds raised will be designated to the University of Arizona Lorraine Lee Scholarship fund
Education is the great economic equalizer that enables all people to succeed in the marketplace. Unfortunately, Arizona suffers from a significant deficiency in education, specifically in training minority students to become healthcare professionals. With a population that is 35 percent Latino and Native American, this deficiency is made even more pronounced by the lack of a diverse biomedical and health-care workforce that is representative of the population it serves. Recognizing this deficiency, Chicanos Por La Causa (CPLC) expanded its investment and commitment in Southern Arizona with the Lorraine Lee Scholarship established in 2016 to increase the number of minority students entering the health sciences careers at The University of Arizona (UofA).
Lorraine Lee was born and raised in Tucson’s Southside and earned her bachelors in psychology from the University of Arizona. Her family has a history in the area of public health starting with father, who worked in the Pima County Health Department. Followed by her great aunt, Teresa Lee who was one of Pima County’s first public health nurses. Lorraine became the first vice president of CPLC and served as a member of the Pima County Board of Health. She was a fearless leader and community advocate who fought tirelessly for equal access to quality health and education. While she lost her battle with cancer at an early age in 2007, her legacy lives on in the local community and her lasting impact is reflective in the development of other community leaders and professionals that continue with her work. Therefore, in honor of Lorraine Lee and her significant legacy, CPLC’s new scholarship bears her name. The CPLC Lorraine Lee Scholarship is providing access and resources to new generations of community-minded students that will create diversity within healthcare industry and further eliminate health disparities.
CPLC is seeking support of companies throughout Southern Arizona to participate in and/or sponsor the 22nd Annual Southern AZ Scholarship Golf Tournament on Friday, November 16, 2018 at the Sewailo Golf Club located at 5655 W. Valencia Rd. All funds raised at the tournament will be designated to the University of Arizona scholarship fund, and will remain in Tucson.
