From June 1 to August 31, the City of Tucson will operate cooling centers in each Ward to provide temporary spaces where the public can escape extreme heat. These centers will be open daily from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., including holidays such as Juneteenth (June 19) and Independence Day (July 4). All centers are located near Sun Tran bus routes to ensure accessibility.
City-operated cooling centers:
Donna Liggins Center, 2160 N. 6th Ave.
El Pueblo Center, 101 W. Irvington Rd., Building #9
Fred Archer Center, 1665 S La Cholla Boulevard
Freedom Center, 5000 E. 29th St.
Morris K. Udall Center, 7200 E. Tanque Verde Rd.

Mayor Regina Romero emphasized that extreme heat is no longer just a summer issue. These centers help protect older adults, children, and people experiencing homelessness, and are part of the city’s preparations for potential heatwaves and power outages.
In addition, 23 Pima County libraries offer cool spaces and heat relief resources for individuals without shelter.
In 2024, the Pima County Medical Examiner reported 146 heat-related deaths between April and October.
