International Women’s Day is a holiday observed yearly on March 8 in many countries around the world and praises the contributions to humanity and today’s world made by women. The first reported case of this celebration began as “National Women’s Day” on February 28th, 1909 in New York City. It was organized by the Socialist Party of America with the goal of promoting equal rights, among them the right of women to vote.
Today, the United Nations observes this day in connection to other relevant issues, such as domestic abuse and discrimination.
