The Best Of Two Worlds

Viva la guerra! What if Trump gets his Mexican war

What would have happened if Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had said yes to Donald Trump’s offer to send in the American military to wage war against the drug cartels?

Are we talking thousands of troops? Artillery? Air support? How many? How much?

Would it involve limited targets or, essentially, an invasion?

And how far the incursion?

All the way to Guatemala?

Then what?

Do we build a wall on that border, too?

And assuming we actually root out and annihilate each and every member of the drug cartels, how many troops do we commit as an occupying force in order to prevent those cartels from reforming?

Hundreds? Thousands?

Trump volunteered to send in the American military in response to the horrendous attack that left three women and six children dead in Sonora.

The president of Mexico, so far, has politely declined Trump’s offer.

Committing American troops by tweet
Is there even the remotest chance the president discussed the ramifications of offering the American military to Mexico to wage a “war” against drug cartels with officials of the departments of defense or homeland security or state before he made the offer?

Or was Trump essentially committing American taxpayer dollars and the lives of our best and bravest by way of … tweets?

Like when he said:

“… the United States stands ready, willing & able to get involved and do the job quickly and effectively. The great new President of Mexico has made this a big issue, but the cartels have become so large and powerful that you sometimes need an army to defeat an army!”
