TUCSON, Ariz, June 24, 2020 – On Monday, Council Member Santa Cruz viewed body cam footage of the in-custody death of Carlos Adrian Ingram-Lopez, 27, at the hands of Tucson police officers on April 21, 2020.
“Adrian was a young Latino father who, in his final moments, pleaded for water, and cried out for his nana,” said Santa Cruz. “As a mother of three sons and a sister to two brothers, I cannot unwatch and unknow that officers used their bodies, denial of water, denial of air, and plastic blankets as a weapon against an unarmed, vulnerable young father in distress.”
“Minimizing the unconscionable behavior of the officers involved is infuriating and dangerous. Shootings and chokeholds are not the only forms of violence.”
Santa Cruz holds that the Mayor and Council needs to push forward to ensure that the Tucson Police Department has transparency on any deaths in police custody and on community input processes, establish a time frame for case review and the release of this information, and institute community governance over police.
“We say that it takes a village to raise a child, well it takes a village to fail them too. We need answers and justice for the Ingram-Lopez family.”
