Fascinating Hummingbird Facts

The hummingbird is the smallest bird discovered so far, ranging from 5 to 25 cm. It flies in all directions, flapping its wings up to 70 times per second, its heart beats more than 1,200 times per minute, and it is the bird with the largest brain in proportion to its body. Its plumage gives the appearance of shining with its own light and there are around 300 species. They are pollinators of forests, where there are no insects or bats that fulfill this function.

If you are a fan of these beautiful birds, and you like to feed them, make sure to prepare the nectar free of dyes and preservatives. Don’t use store-bought red nectar, brown sugar, honey, gelatin, or sugar substitute. Respect the ingredients and appropriate quantities to avoid creating conditions for the proliferation of fungi and bacteria and to guarantee the well-being of these little ones with the calories they need; excess sugar hurts their liver.

Ingredients for the nectar:

1 cup of boiling water

¼ cup refined sugar

Once the water is boiling, I added the sugar. Mix until the sugar dissolves and cover the nectar until it is at room temperature. If you serve it while it is still warm, it may crystallize. Fill the waterer halfway and refrigerate the rest. Locate your waterer where it is not exposed to direct sun, place Vaseline where you hang it and you will avoid the ants. Change the water every two days. If the nectar becomes fermented or moldy, change it immediately.
