School is hard enough for many children without the added strain of trying to learn and focus when they are hungry. While over 85 percent of the students at Tucson Unified School District’s Safford K-8 Magnet School in Central Tucson receive free or reduced cost lunches, sometimes a student’s lunch account can be empty, which in the past meant the heartbreak of no lunch. Now, thanks to the “Karnas Kid” program sponsored by the Law Firm of Bellovin and Karnas, not one student has to go hungry, even if they don’t have money in their lunch account.
“A teacher just walked into our office one day with a handout” according to one of the firm’s bilingual Legal Assistants, Mariana Castro. “I read it and thought it is great to help out kids – but what really caught my eye was their statement that quality food is shown to have a direct result on quality grades. I am a firm believer in good nutrient rich food, beans, real eggs, etc. These kids are our immediate community’s future, our flowers so to speak. We must give them quality nutrients to help them grow.” Firm Attorney Lisa Larkin adds that she once knew a school cafeteria worker who had to quit her job because she could not handle the pain of saying no to a hungry child. Before “Karnas Kids”, when parents could not fund their children’s lunch accounts, the student could go hungry. “No child should go hungry and no one should have to say no to a child for lack of lunch money”, says David Karnas, one of the firm’s managing partners, and for whom the “Karnas Kid’s program is named. We are proud to make this donation which will cover Free Lunches for students without lunch funds in their account for a period of two years.
