The 48 Hour MASH Free Spay/Neuter Clinic held October 9 through 11, at Los Ranchitos Elementary School was a huge success!
A total of 424 dogs and 376 cats were spayed and neutered and another 350 were scheduled for free spay, neuter and vaccinations at a future time.
The goal for the event was 500 animals.

“Thanks to the collaboration of the Sunnyside School District, the Ward 1 and Ward 5 Council offices, animal groups and Richard Fimbresorganizations, the volunteers and most importantly, the 25 veterinarians who signed up to help, the event was a huge success and a good step to help control our pet population,” said Ward 5 Councilmember Richard Fimbres.

The organizers of this event were: Santa Cruz Vet Clinic, Humane Society of Southern Arizona, Dr. Karter Neal, the Sunnyside Unified School District, Pima Medical Institute (Vet Technician Program), Arizona Rangers, Arizona Bilingual Newspaper, Pat Hubbard, Humane Society of Southern Arizona, Ward 5 Councilmember Richard Fimbres, Ward 1 Councilmember Regina Romero, Alvera Gallego, Ward 1 Executive Assistant, Melinda Jacobs Ward 5 Council Aide and Mark Kerr, Ward 5 Chief of Staff.

Organizations, local businesses and partners that provided in-kind donations, cash donations, resources and volunteers.

“This event would not have been possible without the donations made to help to put the free, spay/neuter clinic on,” Councilmember Richard Fimbres added.

The list of donors were the: Animal Welfare Alliance of Southern Arizona (AWASA), Ward 1 Councilmember Regina Romero, Santa Cruz Vet Clinic, Humane Society of Southern Arizona, Pima Medical Institute, U of A College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Paterson Veterinary, MWI Veterinary Supply, R X 0 2 Oxygen and Medical Supplies, Arizona Bilingual Newspaper, Tucson Police Department, Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Arizona Rangers, Poderosa 105.3 FM, Spay and Neuter Solutions, Foundation for Animals In Risk (FAIR), Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF), Pima Animal Care Center, Happy Tails Pet Services, Tucson Cares, El Rio Bakery, Pat’s Chili Dogs, Buffalo Wild Wings, Perfecto’s Mexican Food, Circle K, Loren’s Pooper Scooper Services and People for Animals In the Prevention of Cruelty and Neglect.
As one of the volunteers noted, “Several families came with their fur family member, making attendance a major event in that family’s life. For many of these families with children this was an incredible teaching moment for their children, not only about the importance of responsible pet ownership, but also about the value of community service to others less fortunate, and that kindness and generosity benefit everyone.”
This event was a follow up to the free rabies/parvo vaccination clinic held at the Ward 5 Council office, for which 300 dogs received vaccinations.
“We are truly blessed with such a giving community here in Tucson who helped to serve this many animals,” Councilmember Richard Fimbres said.
