Happy Father’s Day to all Dads in Arizona and Sonora
By Armando Sotelo-Ruiz

The young boy, in maroon slacks and white t-shirt, walked through his old school grounds, when he catches sight of his gray-haired math teacher. As he approaches him, he asks for permission to interrupt his reading and continues, “Father?” in a low voice, so as to not be overheard about their father-son relationship by other students walking close by, “I think it would be a good idea to find a job so that I can help with the household expenses; with my salary I could help pay for the things we need. I can work for “Pancho”, our auto mechanic”.

“No my son!” exclaims the professor, and slants towards his son. He takes some time to fine tune his answer as he cleans his thick sunglasses with the white handkerchief his father had given him years ago. At last, the young boy’s teacher and father places his glasses back on his ears, and answers on the verge of a tear.

“I would never want for you or your brothers and sisters to interrupt your studies, and to lose the opportunity that many other young boys and girls do not have, which is to get an education.” He continues, “If you overheard our table conversation yesterday, that was only a thought, as we adults always have, things that we discuss when we face though times.”

Then, he explains, “I want you to understand that the parents’ roll is to take care of our families. I mean ‘adult’ conversations, because you will eventually realize there are so many single mothers and fathers that have to sacrifice in many ways to provide for their children”.

“Son, do not worry anymore, do not pay attention to normal discussions that have no importance. Rather take advantage of your time in school, we will continue to create the best opportunities for you and by no means will you interrupt your education; remember that education is the only worthwhile legacy a parent can give their children. My responsibility is to make of you a good citizen. You may not understand this completely now, but do not worry, time will help me finish this explanation. For now, return to your classes, I think your recess is over”.

The usual little steps of someone I know interrupt my writing, he’s my son who looks so much like me and my father. I pray to God that I will, one day, answer with the same wise and knowledgeable thoughts.

Wishing all dedicated and hard-working fathers a happy day in Arizona and Sonora!
