The Best Of Two Worlds

Also Exhibiting… Gonzalo Espinosa is known for his fantastic sculptures and murals with adore the cityscape of urban Tucson

SCULPTURE FESTIVAL ARTICLEThis is the “Year of Espinosa” as he celebrates his 40th year as an artist. The longevity of his career offers testament that Espinosa has more than arrived.

Espinosa’s love of design, the dream universe, and the monumentality and unpredictability of the urban landscape have led him to manifest his talent in a multitude of forms; from small works and intimate sculptures to innovative installations and intense monotypes. He has participated in nearly 30 solo and group exhibitions.
Espinosa is originally from Acapulco. He moved to the United States in 1987 lured by the muralist movement of Los Angeles. When Tucson offered him opportunities in public art and arts education, Espinosa made the desert his home.
In 1993 he co-founded Las Artes, an arts experiential program that used community projects to reintroduce at-risk youth to educational and vocational opportunities.
Painting is another of Espinosa’s passions. His canvas reflects the unique light and energy he has found in the Sonoran desert, as well as the realism he witnessed every day in Mexico.
Espinosa has completed more than 20 commissions in Tucson, Phoenix, Atlanta and Guadalajara.  He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards in the United States, Mexico and Ireland, including the Community Service Award from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Youth Service Award from the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, and Mexico’s Best Student in Painting.
